First Aid for Common Emergencies
These steps can help manage pain and protect your tooth while you get to us. Always call us first.
Knocked-Out Tooth
- 1 Pick up the tooth by the crown — never touch the root.
- 2 Gently rinse with clean water if dirty. Do not scrub.
- 3 Try to place it back in the socket if possible, or keep it in milk.
- 4 Get to us within 30–60 minutes — this is critical for re-implantation.
Severe Toothache
- 1 Rinse with warm salt water to reduce inflammation.
- 2 Take over-the-counter pain relief (ibuprofen or paracetamol).
- 3 Do not place aspirin directly on the gum — it can cause burns.
- 4 Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek.
Broken or Chipped Tooth
- 1 Save any tooth fragments in a damp cloth or milk.
- 2 Rinse your mouth with warm water.
- 3 Apply gauze to any bleeding area for 10 minutes.
- 4 Cover sharp edges with sugar-free gum or dental wax if available.
Lost Crown or Filling
- 1 Keep the crown safe — bring it with you.
- 2 Apply clove oil to the exposed tooth to ease sensitivity.
- 3 Dental cement (from a pharmacy) can temporarily re-seat the crown.
- 4 Avoid chewing on that side until treated.
Dental Abscess
- 1 Rinse with a mild salt-water solution several times a day.
- 2 Take pain relief as directed — do not pop or drain the abscess yourself.
- 3 Avoid hot foods and drinks which worsen swelling.
- 4 Seek care urgently — abscesses can spread and become dangerous.
Soft Tissue Injury
- 1 Rinse your mouth gently with a mild salt-water solution.
- 2 Apply pressure with a clean gauze or cloth to stop bleeding.
- 3 Apply a cold compress to the outside of the mouth or cheek.
- 4 If bleeding doesn't stop within 15 minutes, go to A&E.
